The University of Rwanda – College of Science and Technology (UR-CST) would like to recruit competent and qualified academic staff and support staff to occupy vacant positions in the School of Mining and Geology and in the School of Architecture and Built Environment.

I. SCHOOL OF MINING AND GEOLOGY

The School brings together the following two Departments:

1. Department of Geology

The Department of Geology focuses on geological sciences, including geochemistry, petrology, mineralogy, ore mineral deposits, petroleum geology and related areas of earth-science research, teaching and professional practice.

2. Department of Mining

The Department of Mining focuses on mining engineering, mineral exploration and extraction, mining technologies, practical and laboratory training, and the sustainable and responsible development of mineral resources.

II. SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE AND BUILT ENVIRONMENT

The School brings together the following four Departments:

1. Department of Architecture and Design

The Department focuses on architectural education, design, creativity, innovation and the development of sustainable and functional built environment.

2. Department of Construction Economics and Management

The Department focuses on construction management, quantity surveying, cost management and control, procurement, contracts, project management, digital construction and sustainable construction.

3. Department of Spatial Planning

The Department focuses on spatial planning, urban and regional development, land-use planning and the sustainable organisation and management of human settlements and spatial resources.

4. Department of Estate Management and Valuation

The Department focuses on real-estate and property management, property valuation, investment and development, land and property markets, and professional practices related to the management and valuation of real-estate assets.

Schools contribute to teaching and learning, professional training, applied and pedagogical research, consultancy, professional practice, curriculum development, innovation and knowledge transfer to government, industry, professional bodies and communities.

VACANT POSITIONS

1. Senior Lecturer / Lecturer – Geology

Department: Geology
Number: 1

Requirements

  1. PhD in Geoscience with specialization in Geochemistry, Petrology, Mineral Deposit, Mineralogy, Petroleum Geology, etc.

  2. Proof of publication in recognized peer-reviewed journals:

    • At least 2 publication points for the position of Lecturer.

    • At least 5 publication points for the position of Senior Lecturer, three points of which must have been earned since the last promotion.

  3. For the position of Senior Lecturer, at least 3 years of teaching experience as a Lecturer from a recognized institution of higher learning.

  4. For the position of Lecturer, teaching experience is not required; however, it is an added value.

  5. Having supervised at least 2 Master's students for the position of Senior Lecturer.

  6. Being a proactive teacher who is professional, has teamwork skills and can conduct research independently.

  7. Teaching Portfolio with a written part explaining philosophy, method and objectives of teaching, as well as teaching and learning strategies, and with a graphic part presenting works of students supervised, for the position of Senior Lecturer.

  8. Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education is an added value.

  9. Being currently involved in different collaborative research projects related to this position, with proof, is an advantage.

  10. Being a Principal Investigator (PI) or Co-Principal Investigator (Co-PI), with proof, for a given research project, for the position of Senior Lecturer.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • To deliver teaching and learning and undertake related activities.

  • To assist in the development of the new curriculum.

  • To engage in research and/or consultancy and/or knowledge transfer.

  • To undertake teaching and related duties as may be allocated by the Head of Department.

  • To participate in continuous professional development.

  • To conduct research that advances the discipline and/or pedagogic research and/or applied research.

  • To carry out related duties that may be allocated by the Head of Department, Dean of School, College Principal, DVC or VC.

  • To undertake at least one of the following:

    • Scholarly activities, including the development of teaching and learning materials and publication of textbooks.

    • Knowledge transfer to business and the community.

2. Lab Technician – Geology

Department: Geology
Number: 1

Required Academic Qualifications

Compulsory:

The candidate must possess a Bachelor's Degree in Geology, Chemistry, or another relevant field depending on the nature of the laboratory.

Added Advantage:

A Master's Degree/M.Phil. in Geology, Chemistry, or another relevant field will be an added advantage.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Collect, prepare and analyze geological and other relevant laboratory samples as required.

  • Support students and academic staff during practical laboratory activities.

  • Operate laboratory instruments and equipment used for teaching, practical work and related activities, including, where applicable:

    • XRF

    • XRD

    • ICP OES

    • HPLC

    • DGPS

    • Total Station

    • Petrographic Microscopes

  • Ensure appropriate preparation, handling, operation and basic care of laboratory equipment.

  • Record, organize and present laboratory data accurately.

  • Maintain proper records of laboratory activities, samples, equipment use and related data.

  • Control and maintain laboratory stocks, including chemicals, consumables, accessories and other laboratory materials.

  • Ensure the safe storage, handling and disposal of chemicals and laboratory waste products.

  • Carry out risk assessments for laboratory activities and contribute to maintaining safe laboratory working conditions.

  • Support the maintenance and proper functioning of laboratory facilities and equipment.

  • Prepare and update procurement lists for laboratory consumables, equipment accessories and other materials required for laboratory operations.

  • Safeguard the cleanliness and proper condition of laboratory materials and facilities.

  • Support laboratory maintenance activities and promptly report equipment faults or other operational problems.

  • Support practical teaching and other laboratory-related activities organized by the Department.

  • Undertake other laboratory-related duties assigned by the relevant supervisor or University authorities.

3. Lab Technician – Mining / SMG

Department: Mining / SMG
Number: 1

Requirements

  • Having a BSc with at least Second-Class Lower Division in Mining Engineering.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Lab Technician should be the overall person in charge of the laboratory, reporting to the Dean of the School of Mining and Geology on issues relating to laboratory requirements.

The duties include:

  • Clean and restock the laboratory and storage area.

  • Wash and clear tables before and after a laboratory session.

  • Prepare purchase orders for equipment and supplies required for practical classes.

  • Perform general clerical work such as typing, filing and maintaining laboratory records.

  • Prepare both capital and consumables inventory.

  • Assist an instructor in supervising a laboratory.

  • Assist students with their experiments, projects and research.

  • Act as a resource person to instructors and students.

  • Maintain records of student billings for breakages.

  • Take and maintain student laboratory attendance records.

  • Perform routine and analytical determinations.

  • Solve problems and conduct research as needed.

  • Assist staff in the use and operation of equipment.

  • Train and supervise student assistants and/or tutors.

  • Prepare demonstrations and laboratory setups.

  • Operate, maintain and repair technical laboratory equipment.

  • Assist lecturers during laboratory sessions for undergraduate courses.

  • Prepare materials, tools and equipment for laboratory sessions.

  • Operate and maintain laboratory instruments and ensure they are functional and calibrated.

  • Support students during practical sessions and guide them in the proper use of equipment.

  • Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations in the laboratory environment.

  • Maintain records of laboratory usage, inventory and equipment servicing.

  • Order, store and manage laboratory consumables and chemicals.

  • Participate in organizing laboratory manuals and protocols.

  • Assist in research support when necessary.

  • Perform other duties assigned by the Dean of the School.

  • Establish and maintain cooperative work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties.

SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE AND BUILT ENVIRONMENT

4. Senior Lecturer – Architecture and Design

Requirements

  1. PhD in Architecture or Design with a distinct specialization in Architecture, Visual Design or Industrial Design; or an equivalent: extensive industry and/or action research experience with a formidable award-winning project portfolio.

  2. Proof of at least 3 years teaching experience from a recognized institution of higher learning.

  3. Proof of at least 3 supervised Master's level theses/projects.

  4. Teaching Portfolio showcasing your teaching philosophy, as well as teaching and learning strategies, and a reflection on what value you will bring.

  5. Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education is an added advantage.

  6. Being currently involved in different collaborative research projects related to this position, with proof, is an added advantage.

  7. Being a Principal Investigator (PI) or Co-Principal Investigator (Co-PI), with proof, for a given research project is an added advantage.

In a co-leading role:

5. Lecturer – Architecture / Design

Requirements

  1. PhD in Architecture or Design with a distinct specialization in Architecture, Visual Design or Industrial Design; or an equivalent: extensive industry and/or action research experience with a formidable project portfolio.

  2. Reflective Statement showcasing your teaching philosophy, as well as teaching and learning strategies, and a reflection on what value you will bring.

  3. Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education is an added advantage.

  4. Being currently involved in different collaborative research projects related to this position, with proof, is an added advantage.

  5. Being a Principal Investigator (PI) or Co-Principal Investigator (Co-PI), with proof, for a given research project is an added advantage.

  6. Teaching/Teaching Volunteering/Mentorship experience in any context, of at least 1 year, is an added advantage.

6. Assistant Lecturer – Architecture / Design

Requirements

  1. Master of/MSc in Architecture or Design with a distinct specialization in Architecture, Visual Design or Industrial Design; or an equivalent: extensive industry and/or action research experience with a formidable building project portfolio.

  2. Proof of some academic (teaching/mentorship) and/or community outreach involvement.

  3. Reflective Statement showcasing your teaching philosophy, as well as teaching and learning strategies, and a reflection on what value you will bring.

  4. Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education is an added advantage.

  5. Being currently involved in different collaborative research projects related to this position, with proof, is an added advantage.

  6. Teaching/Teaching Volunteering experience in any context, of at least 1 year, is an added advantage.

Duties and Responsibilities

In a support role:

  • Deliver teaching and learning and undertake related activities.

  • Assist in the development of the new curriculum.

  • Engage in research and/or consultancy and/or knowledge transfer.

  • Undertake teaching and related duties as may be allocated by the Head of Department.

  • Participate in continuous professional development.

  • Conduct research that advances the discipline and/or pedagogic research and/or applied research.

  • Carry out related duties that may be allocated by the Head of Department, Dean of School, College Principal, DVC or VC.

  • Undertake at least one of the following:

    • Scholarly activities, including the development of teaching and learning materials and publication of key learning resources.

    • Knowledge transfer to business and the community.
