JOB DESCRIPTION FOR THE CLINICAL PATHOLOGIST

Position Overview:

The University of Rwanda (UR), through the College of Medicine and Health Sciences (CMHS), School of Medicine and Pharmacy, is seeking qualified and highly motivated Clinical Pathologists to strengthen specialist laboratory medicine services, postgraduate medical education, clinical research, laboratory quality management, and academic development within the University and its affiliated teaching hospitals.

The Clinical Pathologist will contribute to the delivery of high-quality specialist clinical pathology and laboratory medicine services while supporting undergraduate and postgraduate education, clinical supervision, research, laboratory quality assurance, mentorship, and academic programme development.

The successful candidates will work collaboratively with clinicians, laboratory professionals, academic staff, postgraduate trainees, and other healthcare professionals to strengthen diagnostic services and promote evidence-based clinical practice.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide specialist clinical pathology and laboratory medicine services across relevant areas, including clinical chemistry, haematology, microbiology, immunology, transfusion medicine, and related disciplines.
• Interpret laboratory results and provide appropriate clinical consultation to healthcare professionals regarding diagnosis, patient management, and diagnostic utilization.
• Promote appropriate and cost-effective utilization of laboratory investigations in support of quality patient care.
• Lead or contribute to laboratory clinical governance, patient safety, quality assurance, quality control, and accreditation activities.
• Support monitoring and implementation of applicable laboratory quality management systems and standards.
• Develop, review, and implement laboratory standard operating procedures, clinical guidelines, policies, and quality improvement initiatives.
• Participate in multidisciplinary clinical meetings, morbidity and mortality reviews, antimicrobial stewardship activities, and other relevant clinical forums.
• Teach undergraduate medical students and postgraduate trainees through lectures, tutorials, seminars, laboratory sessions, case discussions, and other appropriate teaching methods.
• Supervise postgraduate residents in clinical pathology and contribute to competency-based assessment, examinations, and trainee evaluations.
• Contribute to curriculum development, review, and implementation for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
• Utilize appropriate educational technologies, including digital learning and simulation-based approaches, to strengthen teaching and learning.
• Mentor residents, early-career faculty, postgraduate students, and other healthcare professionals in clinical, academic, and research activities.
• Support junior faculty in teaching, assessment, research, academic development, and career progression.
• Develop, lead, and participate in clinically relevant research aligned with institutional, national, and regional health priorities.
• Publish research findings in peer-reviewed scientific journals and present findings at relevant academic and professional conferences.
• Supervise postgraduate dissertations and support postgraduate students in research design, data analysis, scientific writing, and publication.
• Contribute to research grant proposals, resource mobilization, and academic collaborations.
• Ensure that research activities comply with applicable ethical, regulatory, and professional requirements.
• Participate in curriculum review, programme evaluation, accreditation activities, academic committees, and institutional quality improvement initiatives.
• Support the development of institutional collaborations, subspecialty training opportunities, and research networks.
• Maintain active professional registration, medical licensure, continuing professional development, and other applicable professional requirements.
• Perform any other duties relevant to the position as assigned by the Programme Director or Head of Department.

Minimum Qualifications

• Recognized Medical Degree (MD, MBBS, MBChB) from an accredited institution.
• Recognized postgraduate degree in Clinical Pathology, such as an MMed, Specialist Degree, or Fellowship in Clinical Pathology.
• Valid registration and licence to practice medicine issued by a recognized professional regulatory authority.
• Eligibility for academic appointment at Lecturer level or above, in accordance with applicable University of Rwanda academic requirements.
• Demonstrated experience in clinical laboratory practice, laboratory medicine, postgraduate teaching, clinical supervision, research, or laboratory quality management.
• Demonstrated ability to teach, supervise, mentor, or assess medical students, residents, postgraduate trainees, or healthcare professionals.
• For qualifications obtained outside Rwanda, the candidate must provide the required Equivalence Certificate from the Rwanda Higher Education Council (HEC) prior to final appointment.
