SHIFT LUBRICATION TECHNICIAN (POSITION 1)

  4. Reports To: Maintenance Shift Supervisor
  5. Job Brief: The Shift Lubrication Technician is responsible for carrying out planned lubrication, inspection and basic condition-monitoring activities on equipment within the gravity tungsten recovery plant. The role ensures that bearings, gearboxes, pumps, conveyors, crushers, screens, gravity recovery equipment and other lubricated components receive the correct lubricant, in the correct quantity and at the required frequency. The technician also identifies and reports early signs of equipment deterioration, contamination, leakage, overheating, abnormal noise or vibration to support reliable plant operation, reduce unplanned downtime and improve equipment availability.
  1. Key Responsibilities: A Shift Lubrication Technician has the following responsibilities and duties:

i. Planned Lubrication and Inspection:

  • Ensure lubrication equipment, grease guns, pumps, hoses and related tools are clean, serviceable and correctly identified.
  • Inspect lubrication points and associated equipment for leaks, damaged seals, contamination, overheating, abnormal noise, vibration and other indications of developing equipment failure.
  • Lubricate bearings, gearboxes, chains, couplings, pumps, conveyor components and other designated lubrication points using the correct lubricant, quantity and application method.
  • Carry out scheduled lubrication routes and lubrication tasks in accordance with approved maintenance plans, manufacturer recommendations and Company procedures.

ii. Lubricant Selection and Contamination Control:

  • Use only approved oils, greases and other lubricants specified for each item of plant equipment.
  • Prevent cross-contamination by using dedicated, clean and correctly labelled lubrication equipment and containers.
  • Maintain lubricant storage and handling practices to protect lubricants from water, dust, dirt and other contaminants.
  • Report incorrect, contaminated, expired or insufficient lubricant stock to the supervisor responsible.

iii. Condition Monitoring and Defect Identification:

  • Escalate critical defects immediately where continued operation could result in equipment damage, safety risk or production loss.
  • Assist with oil sampling and basic lubricant condition checks where required and ensure samples are correctly identified and submitted.
  • Report abnormal temperature, noise, vibration, oil condition, grease condition, leakage, seal failure or other defects requiring mechanical attention.
  • Monitor equipment condition while performing lubrication activities and identify early signs of mechanical deterioration.

iv. Preventive Maintenance and Reliability Support:

  • Assist maintenance personnel during planned maintenance activities where lubrication expertise is required.
  • Contribute to the prevention of premature bearing, gearbox, pump and other component failures through disciplined lubrication practices.
  • Assist with lubrication route optimization, equipment criticality reviews and improvements to lubrication frequencies and practices where required.
  • Support the Engineering team in preventive maintenance activities related to lubrication and equipment reliability.

iv. Shift Operations and Plant Support:

  • Work closely with plant operators and maintenance personnel to identify equipment problems and ensure timely intervention.
  • Coordinate lubrication activities with plant operations to minimise disruption to production while maintaining safe working conditions.
  • Complete shift handovers and communicate outstanding lubrication tasks, defects and equipment concerns to the incoming team.
  • Respond to lubrication-related breakdown or urgent maintenance requirements when called upon.

v. Documentation and Reporting:

  • Accurately record all completed lubrication activities, inspections, lubricant usage, defects and corrective actions in the applicable maintenance records or system.
  • Maintain accurate lubrication route checklists and report missed or inaccessible lubrication points.
  • Report recurring equipment and lubrication problems to the Mechanical / Maintenance Shift Supervisor.
  • Support the development and updating of lubrication schedules, lubrication point registers and relevant maintenance procedures.

vii. Health, Safety and Environmental Compliance:

  • Ensure all work is performed in compliance with Company health and safety standards, environmental requirements, risk assessments and safe work procedures.
  • Apply isolation and lock-out/tag-out requirements before working on equipment where required.
  • Use the correct PPE and safe handling practices when working with oils, greases, cleaning agents and other maintenance materials.
  • Prevent and immediately report oil and grease spills, leaks and environmental contamination, and maintain good housekeeping in work areas.
  • Participate in safety meetings, toolbox talks, inspections and risk assessments.

viii. Training and Continuous Improvement:

  • Participate in relevant technical training and maintain competency in lubrication practices and equipment reliability.
  • Share lubrication-related observations and practical knowledge with operators, fitters and other maintenance personnel.
  • Identify opportunities to improve lubrication practices, equipment reliability, housekeeping and maintenance efficiency.
  • Assist with implementing approved improvements to lubrication systems, equipment and procedures.

ix. Other Responsibilities:

  • Comply with Company work and leave schedules.
  • Comply with all Company policies, procedures and instructions.
  • Perform other duties as required by the Superior or Management, within the scope of the role.

7. Job Requirements:

A Shift Lubrication Technician should have the following education, experience and skills:

 i. Education and Certification:

  • A minimum of a Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) Certificate III in Mechanical Fitting, Lubrication, Maintenance or a related field.
  • Training or certification in industrial lubrication, condition monitoring or equipment maintenance is advantageous.

ii. Experience:

  • At least 2 years of experience in industrial maintenance, lubrication or a similar engineering role, preferably in a mining or mineral processing environment.
  • Practical experience working with rotating plant equipment, bearings, gearboxes, pumps, conveyors and related mechanical equipment.

iii. Technical Skills:

  • Good knowledge of industrial lubricants, grease and oil application methods, lubrication frequencies and contamination control.
  • Ability to identify common signs of equipment deterioration, including abnormal heat, noise, vibration, leakage and lubricant degradation.
  • Ability to use lubrication tools, grease guns, oil transfer equipment and basic inspection equipment correctly.
  • Ability to read and understand lubrication schedules, equipment manuals, maintenance instructions and basic technical drawings.
  • Basic understanding of mechanical equipment and the relationship between correct lubrication and equipment reliability.

iv. Soft Skills:

  • Excellent attention to detail, organization and time-management skills.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills, with commitment to safety and compliance.
  • Ability to use and work with English as the business language.
  • Ability to work independently and follow planned lubrication routes and schedules accurately.
  • Strong problem-identification and reporting skills.

v. Physical Requirements:

  • Physically fit to work in challenging plant and mining conditions, including standing, walking, climbing, bending and working around operating industrial equipment.
  • Able to handle lubrication equipment and lubricant containers safely and work in areas that may be wet, dusty, noisy or confined.

vi. Other Requirements:

  • Willingness to work shifts, overtime and respond to urgent maintenance requirements as required.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development and staying updated with lubrication, maintenance and equipment reliability practices.
