About the Scholarship

The KU Leuven Scholarship for Africa 2027–2028 offers outstanding African students an opportunity to pursue an eligible Master’s degree at KU Leuven in Belgium.

The scholarship aims to make higher education accessible to talented students who demonstrate excellent academic performance, strong motivation, leadership potential and commitment to making a positive contribution to society.

Rwandan students are eligible to apply, provided they meet the nationality, residence, academic and programme requirements. Selection is highly competitive.

Scholarship Benefits

Successful applicants receive:

• Full tuition fee waiver for the duration of the eligible programme, with an annual administration fee of €140 still payable.

• €4,000 scholarship allowance covering the entire duration of the programme.

The tuition fee waiver covers one academic year for a 60-ECTS Master’s programme or two academic years for a 120-ECTS programme. The €4,000 allowance is a one-time payment, not an annual allowance.

Only one KU Leuven Scholarship for Africa is available for the 2027–2028 academic year.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must:

• Be nationals of an eligible African country, including Rwanda.

• Reside in an eligible country at the time of application.

• Demonstrate excellent academic performance and strong academic potential.

• Hold previous degree qualifications obtained at a higher education institution outside Flanders, Belgium.

• Meet the admission requirements of their chosen Master’s programme.

• Demonstrate a good command of English and meet the programme’s language requirements.

Applicants must also ensure that their chosen programme is eligible. Bridging programmes and distance-learning programmes are not eligible for this scholarship. Students already enrolled at a Flemish higher education institution are generally not eligible, subject to the university’s stated exception.

Selection Criteria

Applications are assessed based on:

• Academic performance and awards.

• Motivation.

• Relevant experience.

• Demonstrated leadership abilities.

• Commitment and overall applicant profile.

Because the scholarship is highly competitive, applicants are encouraged to submit a complete and compelling application.

Application Procedure

Step 1: Apply for an eligible Master’s programme.

Submit a complete application to KU Leuven before the scholarship deadline. Include the required KU Leuven Scholarships & Master Mind Candidacy Form as an annex in the application system.

Step 2: Register your scholarship candidacy.

Complete the separate online scholarship candidacy registration before the deadline. Both steps must be completed on time.

Step 3: Prepare for the next selection stage.

Nominated candidates will be informed by 10 March 2027 at the latest. They will then be asked to submit a one-minute motivational video by 16 March 2027.

Applicants should begin early to allow sufficient time to prepare documents, complete the university admission application and register their scholarship candidacy.
