The Inter-University Council for East Africa (IUCEA) invites qualified nationals of the East African Community (EAC) to apply for Cohort 4 of the KfW-funded EAC Scholarship Programme for Master’s studies.

The scholarship supports students to pursue a two-year Master’s degree in an EAC Partner State other than their country of citizenship.

Applications are open from 20 August 2026 until 10 September 2026 at 17:00 East African Time.

Eligible Countries

Applicants must be nationals of one of the following EAC Partner States:

• Burundi
• Democratic Republic of the Congo
• Kenya
• Rwanda
• Somalia
• South Sudan
• Tanzania
• Uganda

Eligible Fields of Study

The scholarships support Master’s programmes in the following thematic areas:

• Mathematics
• Engineering
• Informatics
• Science
• Technology
• Business Science

Applicants must select an eligible Master’s programme offered by a participating university in an EAC Partner State different from their country of citizenship.

What the Scholarship Covers

The scholarship package includes:

• Return economy-class air ticket between the scholar’s home country and host country
• Full tuition fees paid directly to the host university
• EUR 200 arrival allowance
• EUR 380 monthly stipend for accommodation, meals, local transport and other living expenses
• EUR 650 study materials allowance
• EUR 1,500 study and research allowance
• Medical insurance for the duration of the scholarship
• Visa or entry fees where applicable
• Participation in at least one extracurricular event

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must:

1. Be a citizen of one of the 8 EAC Partner States
2. Be below 35 years of age at the time of application
3. Apply to study in an EAC Partner State other than their country of citizenship
4. Hold a Bachelor’s Degree with at least Second Class Upper Division, Distinction, or equivalent
5. Have applied for admission to an eligible Master’s programme at a participating university
6. Submit a complete scholarship application within the application period

Female applicants, persons with disabilities and applicants from other disadvantaged backgrounds are particularly encouraged to apply.

Application Process

The application has two separate stages.

Part A: Apply for University Admission

First, applicants must:

1. Review the eligible programmes and select a programme and university
2. Visit the selected university’s website and check its admission requirements
3. Apply for admission to the university
4. Indicate their intention to apply for the EAC Scholarship Programme
5. Pay the university application fee where applicable

Important: Applying to a university alone does not mean that you have applied for the EAC Scholarship.

Part B: Apply for the EAC Scholarship

Applicants must then:

1. Complete the online EAC Scholarship Application Form
2. Prepare all required supporting documents
3. Combine the documents into a single ZIP folder in PDF format
4. Submit the application documents by email

The email subject should follow the required format:

[Applicant Name] – Application for [Master’s Programme] at [University] – Phase II EACSP

Applicants applying for more than one eligible programme or university must submit a separate scholarship application and separate email submission for each programme.

Applicants should prepare the required documents, including:

• National ID or Passport
• Recent passport photograph
• Proof of university admission or application
• Bachelor’s Degree Certificate and Academic Transcript
• Curriculum Vitae (CV)
• Academic Reference Letter
• Professional Reference Letter
• Professional Membership Certificate, where applicable
• Recent payslips, where applicable
• Bank statements, where applicable
• Evidence of publications, research, awards, fellowships or certifications, where applicable
• Leadership or volunteer certificates, where applicable
• Evidence of dependents, where applicable
• Documents supporting disadvantaged circumstances, where applicable

Applicants must follow the prescribed document naming and submission requirements.

Important Application Requirements

Applicants should note that:

• All applications must be submitted in English
• Applicants must complete both university admission and scholarship application processes
• Each programme requires a separate complete application
• Incomplete applications will not be considered
• Only shortlisted applicants will be contacted
• Providing false or incomplete information can lead to disqualification
• Scholarship awards cannot be deferred or transferred to another person
• Submission of an application does not guarantee a scholarship award

Note for Rwandan applicants: Rwanda is among the eligible EAC Partner States. However, a Rwandan applicant must choose a participating university in another EAC country, not Rwanda.
