Program overview

The Centre for Population Health (CPH) at UGHE serves as a hub for field research, education, training, and community service to improve population health in Rwanda and beyond. Its flagship program, the Human Development and Demographic Surveillance System (HD2SS),ย establishedย in ruralย Butaroย in September 2025, functions as a primary field research platform for UGHE and external collaborators. The HD2SS generates longitudinal data on disease patterns and exposures, assesses the epidemiological and socio-demographic impacts of health conditions, and monitors trends in key human development indicators, among other outcomes.

Position overview:

Theย data scientistย willย be the technicalย leadย ofย theย Human Development and Demographic Surveillance System (HD2SS),ย responsibleย forย databaseย design,ย data pipelineย development, and data systems maintenance. This is a broad, hands-on role requiring the ability to move between long-term development work, immediate operational needs, and research tasks.

The ideal candidate has strong programming skills,ย experience with database design,ย a command of quantitative methods, andย the driveย toย serveย as the link between field operations, data processing, andย research.

Roles and responsibilities

Data engineering and systems:

  • Manage,ย modify, and expandย HD2SSโ€™ PostgreSQL relational database to meet the programโ€™s long-term data collection needs.
  • Oversee the extraction, transformation, and loading (ETL) of survey data.ย This includes developing new extraction and processing scripts and running the ETLย pipelineย on a daily basis.
  • Implementย aย technical system to track vital events (births, deathsย including cause of death using verbal autopsy, migrations) and link HD2SS data with external health facility records.
  • Support the UGHE ITย teamย in managing secureย serverย andย regularlyย backing up data.

Field operations and data management:

  • Support the HD2SSย research andย dataย teamย in the development and field implementation of data capture tools (specifically Survey Solutions).
  • Strengthen protocols for data cleaning, quality control,ย and maintenance of unique study identifiers.
  • Regularlyย meet with theย research teamย andย fieldย data collectors to address data quality issues and improve data captureย system.
  • Collaborate withย theย HD2SSย research team, cohort manager, and external partners (e.g.,ย research stakeholders) toย establishย data collection procedures.
  • Create tools or applicationsย forย the data team to performย routine data corrections, such as merging duplicate records.

Data analysis and research

  • Contribute toย data analysis for publications, grantย applications, presentations, and reports.
  • Prepare clean, well-documented datasets for analysis and publications.
  • Generate data visualizations and tabulations to support research activities.
  • Implement algorithms for data de-duplication and linkages.

Training and academic support

  • Collaborate closely with the HD2SSย research teamย to strengthen capacity in data
    management and analysis.
  • Support MBBS and MGHD students through teachingย assistance, particularly practicum support.
  • Supervise and train internsย andย research team on data quality assurance
  • Engage in project meetings and support the missions of the CPH and the Institute of Global Health Equity Research at UGHE to advance the science and practice of population health.
  • Other responsibilities assigned byย supervisor.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Education andย experience
    • Masterโ€™s degreeย or aboveย inย computerย science, statistics, or a related field with a
      strongย quantitativeย and programming focus.ย (Equivalent experience may substitute forย masterโ€™sย degree.)
    • 3+ years ofย hands-onย experienceย in database design and data pipeline
      development, preferably inย a researchย or public health settings.
    • Strong programming skills, particularly in Pythonย andย SQL.
    • Experience withย relationalย databaseย design andย management.
  • Competencies
    • Ability toย turnย researchย objectivesย intoย technical tasks and independentlyย execute onย them, and to clearly communicate the tradeoffs and implications of different technical decisions to research colleagues.
    • Ability to translate epidemiological and quantitative research concepts into technical decisions around database design and data pipeline development.
    • Exceptionalย attention to detail and commitment to data quality.
    • Ability to respond to changing research needs and technical challenges, andย toย envisionย systems for long-term data collection and management.
    • Ability to work under pressure, meet tight deadlines, and manage competing priorities.
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.

Preferred:

  • Experience working withย complex,ย longitudinal datasets.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of data collection processes and challenges.
  • Familiarity with survey design.
  • Experience working in a low- or middle-incomeย countryย research or health system setting.
  • Written and oral communication skills in Kinyarwanda.
  • Familiarity with Survey Solutions data collection software.
  • Experience with Gitย or otherย version controlย systems.

The Consortium of Medical Schoolsโ€“Africa (COMS-A) is a bold, continent-wide initiative launched in March 2025 at theย Medicalย Educationย 2025 Conferenceย in Kigali, Rwanda. Bringing together more than 135 medical schools from 30+ countries, COMS-A provides a unified, African-led platform to strengthen medical education and research, harmonize curricula, foster collaboration, and shape policy in alignment with continental and global frameworks.

About the SHINE Initiative

COMS-A is launching the SHINEย Initiative,ย a major continental program focused on two critical strategic priorities:

  1. Women in Leadership (WIL) in African medical education.
  2. Advancingย Maternal, Newborn and Child Healthย (MNCH)ย andย Gender, Sexual and Reproductive Healthย (GSRH)ย through medical education, research, and simulation-based training.

To support these ambitious continental programs, COMS-A isย recruitingย this position for the Secretariat.

Position Summary

The Research Assistant will provide research, data, and monitoring and evaluation support to both SHINE workstreams: Women in Leadership (WIL) and MNCH and GSRHR. This includes supporting baseline and follow-up studies, providing quantitative and qualitative data support, coordinating surveys and research activities across COMS-A institutions, and contributing to literature reviews, policy briefs, and academic manuscripts. The Research Assistant will work closely with both Program Leads and the Secretariat team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the continental baseline study on women in leadership in African medical schools, including data collection, management, and analysis.
  • Assistย with qualitative and quantitative research activities for both WIL and MNCH workstreams, including instrument development, data collection, transcription, coding, cleaning, and basic analysis.
  • Coordinate online and institutional surveys across COMS-A member schools, ensure data quality, andย maintainย updated databases.
  • Provide research and coordination support to the COMS-A MNCH Research Mentorship Program, including tracking projects, supporting training activities, andย assistingย with ethics and reporting requirements.
  • Contribute to the development of MNCH and gender-responsive educational resources, curricula, and case studies by compiling evidence and supporting content drafting.
  • Prepare literature reviews and contribute to policy briefs, technical reports, conference abstracts, and academic manuscripts.
  • Support monitoring and evaluation for both workstreams, including indicator tracking, data visualization, and preparation of M&E summaries.
  • Provide administrative and logistical support to meetings, workshops, and webinars, andย maintainย organized records and document repositories.
  • Facilitate communication with COMS-A member institutions and partners, ensuringย timelyย information sharing and follow-up.
  • Perform M&E functions of both work streams.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Public Health, Global Health, Education, Social Sciences, or a related fieldย required;ย Masterโ€™sย degree preferred.

Skills and Competencies

  • Demonstrated research skills in both qualitative and quantitative methods.
  • Prior experience supporting academic or programmatic research, preferably in health or education.
  • Proficiencyย in data management tools such as Excel, and familiarity with software such as STATA, R, SPSS, NVivo, or similar is an advantage.
  • Strong writing and editing skills, with the ability to synthesize information clearly and concisely.
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with multiple teams and stakeholders across different countries and time zones.
  • High levelsย of professionalism, integrity, and discretion in handling sensitive information.

Position Overview

The Full-Time Faculty member will contribute to teaching, curriculum development, academic leadership, and scholarly activity within the Health Professions Education (HPE) program while providing institutional leadership for Facultyย Affairs.Thisย position strengthens teaching excellence and supports institutional systems that enable faculty performance, development, and engagement. The role requires an experienced educator withย demonstratedย expertiseย in higher education leadership, faculty development, and academic quality systems.

Key Responsibilities

1. Teaching and Academic Responsibilities (HPE Program)

  • Design, deliver, and evaluate assigned modules within the HPE program.
  • Facilitate learner-centered, evidence-informed educational experiences.
