Professional Internships Program in Rwanda

About the Internship Program

The Professional Internship Program in Rwanda was adopted in 2009 with the aim of equipping fresh graduates with practical skills and professional experience needed to make a successful transition from school to the labour market.

The program is designed to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical work experience by giving Rwandan graduates an opportunity to apply what they learned in school in a real working environment.

Through the program, interns are placed in public institutions, private companies, and civil society organizations that are related to their fields of study. This enables young graduates to gain valuable professional experience, develop workplace skills, and improve their chances of securing employment.

In general, the internship lasts for six (6) months. However, for technical fields such as agriculture and other areas that require extended practical training, the internship period may be extended to up to twelve (12) months.

Internship Program Objectives

The Internship Program aims to:

  1. Equip interns with practical skills that facilitate the transition from school to the labour market.

  2. Strengthen graduates’ practical capacity by connecting theoretical knowledge gained in school with real-world workplace experience.

  3. Develop professionalism and workplace skills, including communication, interpersonal, teamwork, and organizational skills.

  4. Promote positive work ethics among young graduates while developing effective work competencies and employability skills required in the workforce.

  5. Provide valuable professional experience that improves graduates’ employability and competitiveness in the labour market.

Benefits of the Internship Program

Participating in the Internship Program provides graduates with several important benefits, including:

  1. Practical experience: Interns have the opportunity to put their academic knowledge into practice and learn through hands-on work.

  2. Professional development: The program helps participants develop professionalism, communication, interpersonal, teamwork, and organizational skills.

  3. Industry knowledge: Interns gain practical knowledge and expertise related to the subjects and careers they studied in school.

  4. Smooth transition to employment: The internship helps graduates become familiar with workplace expectations and makes the transition from school to employment easier.

  5. Improved employability: The practical experience gained during the internship can strengthen a graduate’s CV and increase their chances of finding employment.
